ABOUT SYJA
The South Yarra Judo Academy was created in 2021 by our coach Leonardo Santos who has been practising and teaching Judo for more than 30 years. Discipline, the safe practice of sports and resilience are some of the premises of our Dojo. The Judo Club is focused on teaching kids and adults who are looking for learning martial art, do exercises or even who is looking to get in the competition world. Our Dojo is a member of the JUDO VICTORIA and JUDO AUSTRALIA and uses a recognised brand of Judo mats to ensure the safety of our students.
About the Coach
Leonardo Santos started in Judo in Brazil as a child and now accumulates more than 30 years practising and teaching Judo. His coach was Geraldo Bernardes, one of the greatest names of Judo in Brazil and the Brazilian National Team's coach for 4 Olympics Games. For this reason, Leonardo had the opportunity to train and learn from great names in the World Judo. During his career, Leonardo was an athlete of Gama Filho University and was a multi-medalist in national and state competitions.

Judo
Judo, which means "gentle way" in Japanese, is a martial art created in Japan by Jigoro Kano in 1882 as a physical, mental, and moral pedagogy. It was derived from the ancient techniques of jujutsu. Jigoro Kano, a student of jujutsu, believed that martial art could change into a modern-day, acceptable sport. He refined the art and from that was born the art of Judo. Judo is the most widely-practised martial art in the World, and the second-most practised sport worldwide behind soccer. Since 1964 Judo is an Olympic sport. Judo uses mostly throws, immobilisations, chokes and joint locks.
The original school of Judo that was started by Kano, the Kodokan, is still active in Tokyo today.
